Niggling bothersome details about Heroes3

This is just me venting about a few pointless things. Pay it no mind.

  • I don't like the new pikemen, halberdiers, orcs and orc chieftains from HotA. In almost every respect, HotA is better than original HOMM, so the handful of things that I don't like as much bother me more. You can, I suppose, swap out the def files, if you figure out which ones they are, but the portraits were encrypted and they specifically seemed to have made it so that you can't swap them out. Lame! I've got all the data in the original Heroes 3 Complete lod file; why can't I use them?
  • I don't really like the changes to Necromancy and the Necropolis. I actually wish that they'd left balance alone in various other areas as well, like Logistics and maybe even Estates (although they improved that one instead of nerfing it.) I know that part of the reason they messed with it was for competitive play, but I've been an exclusively single player guy since before Heroes3 even came out in 1999 and I was still playing Heroes2.
  • The terrain patches implemented in HotA are complete terrains in VCMI, complete with their own matching mountains and hills, etc. The Ice Caves, the Fields of Glory, the Dunes, etc. I wish that were true for HotA too. (For one thing, the VCMI map editor is terrible.) In fact, I wish all of the cosmetic terrain from VCMI were useable in HotA.
  • Two really cool new additions to the game aren't useable in HotA; the Tides of War upgrade and the Neutral Heroes upgrade. I wish that they'd get converted to a HotA2 or HotA update/upgrade of some kind! I doubt that they will, though. There seems to be a kind of "go our own way" attitude with HotA. Plus, HotA haven't done a lot in a long time. We've been promised the Factory town for three years (not that I've been paying attention that long, but that's when early teasers were released) and there's no sign of it. Given that it's kind of a Forge-lite, I'm OK with never getting it, honestly. I'd rather get Tides of War and Neutral Heroes. Of the new towns that I've seen, the Bastion/Pavilion seems to be the only one that I have any interest in. Which, again, is only VCMI capable (or maybe it's in ERA too.)
  • ERA/WoG isn't something that I'm very interested in, but VCMI is. Too bad that it's pretty buggy and lacks a few crucial features still. Sigh.
In short, there's no "perfect" version of the game. VCMI does some things that HotA doesn't and vice versa. HotA is generally the better option for me, but I wish I could get the extras that I can get in VCMI in HotA. On the other hand, I wish VCMI were just a bit more stable and predictable and that the mods installed worked consistently. And I wish it had the decline skill from Witch's Huts and Scholars and the Invite Hero feature that HD mod and HotA have. I guess that's the inevitable result of all of the forking that went on in the unofficial development groups. Too much incompatibility with each other. If I were to ever win the lottery, I wonder how feasible it would be for me to hire a developer or two for a year or two and pay them well to fix and merge the game into what I want it to be?
