Another one to take down! This is the first one where I decided to do something a little bit radical. I may change my mind later; I still have all of the files for the alternatives. But let's review.
Sorry. The last line of images is a bit scrunched. I didn't do a good job of estimating how much vertical real estate I needed, but it wasn't worth it to go back and try and fix it.
I'll ignore commenting on the majority of these, because the comments are always the same, although I will note that the Pack 01 and Pack 02 collections did a better job that normal. The two stable diffusion AI generations look pretty bad. They weren't good this time around. That meant that ensrick's was the only one that would fit normally; but I thought that it also made him look too young and too pretty. A bit like a teen heart-throb, except almost girly. No thanks. So, I went trawling through some of the other images I could find. Ensrick also did alternate portraits for a number of other characters that don't show up in the version of the game that I play; the one shown there at the end is a character that you can only play on the VCMI alternative to the main game, with the Wake of the Gods expansion installed, and Neutral Heroes. Even then, you won't see him much. I will not install WoG, because it turns the game into something that I'm not particularly interested in. So, as far as I'm concerned, there's plenty of alternate portraits out there; the question is; do they look enough like the character I'd consider using them for someone else? (spoiler alert; I did on some others down the line too.)
Now, to be fair, the choice I picked also looks a bit like a teen heart-throb, but at least he doesn't look too feminine. I might yet change my mind and revert back to the regular ensrick portrait, but for now, I'm not and I don't think that I will. I think that over time I'll get bolder with replacing art with stuff that doesn't hew quite as close to the original rather than the other way around, so this may be seen more as a first step into a new world rather than one that I'm likely to reverse.
WINNER: ensrick's portrait of Unrish, a character that I couldn't ever use
