The story of Star Wars
Sigh. Yep. And, Disney did it to The Spectacular Spider-man too, and replaced it with the greatly inferior Ultimate Spider-man (which has now been replaced too, because it sucked.) And they did it with Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which they replaced with the greatly inferior (yet better than Rebels or Ultimate Spider-man) Avengers Assemble.
This is ground zero for why I don't believe that giving the reins to Dave Filoni or even Jon Favreau is going to save Star Wars. They will be—maybe—as good as the prequel trilogy. But they are incapable of being better than that until they learn better craftsmanship in the writing of characters and plot structure.
Based on Filoni's CV, The Clone Wars which has about a 50% pretty good episode rate, and Rebels, which has... a much lower good episode rate, he's not the right guy for the job.
And honestly, Jon Favreau isn't that great of a film-maker either. What's on his CV? A whole bunch of mediocre and forgettable stuff, with only a handful of gems.
Filoni is too reverential of EU "canon" and is constantly trying to reintroduce elements of it that George Lucas had previously invalidated (like almost everything about Mandalorian culture, for instance) and Favreau probably just doesn't really care that much about canon and is too cavalier for it. This wouldn't be as big of a problem if they were really good film-makers, but given that they're mediocre film-makers, the combination is that they're making stuff that barely qualifies as Star Wars, honestly. And I say that as a fan of The Mandalorian streaming show. But it really barely qualifies as Star Wars in most respects.
