For the heckuvit, here's two fairly well known 80s songs (one more than the other) that share a common trait; the version that's well-known is actually the re-recorded and re-released version; both were released in an earlier version that did not become well known and dropped after failing to make much of an impact in the charts. Both were later re-recorded by the same band again and released again, and went on to become big hits.
In the case of "Take On Me" there's even an earlier music video which was replaced (along with the re-recorded version of the song) with the other one that's much more famous.
UPDATE: This post would be better with the more famous versions for comparison, wouldn't it?
